Steel, graphic projection
“I You Diva” melds corporeal and religious iconographies to open a richly paradoxical dialogue about pleasure and suffering; equality and sacrifice; agency and control. By conflating the contradictory associations of an IUD alongside with the crucifix's resonances of consecrated anguish, this piece provocatively elevates the maligned feminine experience. The viewer must step up on an elongated platform to stand in front of and perhaps become the “You” in I You Diva. The sharp, pointed edges placed against the bright pink projection of the differing hormonal birth control side effects for men and women ask the audience to consider for whom and why does birth control exist as it does?
Performance and church installation
This iteration is staged in the pink sanctuary of Church of Christ in Hanover, NH. Walking down the church hallway, the 6'3" steel form appears to be a crucifix until it takes the unmistakable shape of an intrauterine device (IUD). This charged setting brings in dialogue on where it is “appropriate” to talk about female pleasure and pain, and why, while enhancing the religious connotations of the symbol.
