Ruthie
"Ruthie" is intimate short on intergenerational memory. Ruth Delilah Salomon King, my grandmother, was born in Bolivia to Holocaust refugees. Her earliest memories are looking out at Mount Illimani while waiting for the post to bring letters from family in Poland that would never arrive. After immigrating to the Bronx, she struggled to fit in as a Jewish girl who only spoke Spanish. Now, for anyone who asks, Ruthie is a New Yorker; disinterested in time before the melting pot. But in her mid 80s, she was finally ready to share her life's story. Through examining old family photos, Ruthie confronts her early life–balancing the pain of unearthing this trauma with sharing her life with her granddaughters.
